Coloncanceristhethirdmostprevalentcancergloballyandthesecondprimarycauseofcancer-relateddeathsthatisreportedlyresponsibleformorethan50,000fatalitieseveryyearintheUnitedStatesalone.Thelifetimeriskofdevelopingcoloncancerisslightlylowerinwomenthaninmen,asstatedbytheAmericanCancerSociety(ACS).TheCOLO-205celllinewasestablishedin1975froma70-year-oldCaucasianmalepatientwithcoloncancer.ThesecellsexhibitepithelialcellmorphologyandcomefromaDukes’typeDtumor.Thepatienthadbeentreatedwith5-fluorouracilforapproximatelyfiveweeksbeforeremovalofthespecimen.Also,thecellshavebeentestednegativeforCSAp,positiveforkeratin,andexpressa36,000-daltoncellsurfaceglycoprotein,whichhasarelatedantigen.TheCOLO-205celllineissimilartoCOLO201andwasderivedfromthesamepatient.Inadditiontobeinganadequatehostforstudyingcoloncancer,thiscelllineisutilizedforresearchingtheSV-40monkeyvirus.Moreover,inbiochemistry,theCOLO-205celllineisusedfortransfectionandhasapplicationsfortheproductionofrecombinantproteins.AltogenBiosystemsprovidestransfectionreagentkitsfortheCOLO-205coloncancercellline.Thenanoparticle-basedreagentshavedemonstratedhighefficiencyandlowcytotoxicity.
